About

Canopy Nursery

Canopy's nursery produces a wide range of perennial plants, with an emphasis on productive tree crops that we have experience growing ourselves. We like to offer plants that are resilient and can thrive varying conditions. Our main focus in the nursery is Chestnut and Black Currant. Our wide selection of Chestnut cultivars sets us apart from other nurseries. We work with Chestnut orchardists that have been growing and selecting superior trees for decades. For Black Currants we work with Savanna Institute to make available McGinnis cultivars. Which are among the best tasting, high yielding, and disease resistant selections available.

We are also expanding our nursery offerings to include other shrubs fruits such as Honeyberries, Serviceberries, Gooseberries, Jostaberries, and Bush Cherries. Other trees we work with are: Heartnuts, Persimmons, Asian Pears, and Peaches.

Our bare-root trees and shrubs can be shipped across the US, and our potted stock is available for local pickup.

Canopy Farm Management

Beyond our nursery, Canopy Farm Management provides tree planting and management services to farmers and landowners in the Midwest through our farm management division. We establish perennial crops, timber plantings, conservation practices, and integrated agroforestry systems. We combine expert staff, thoughtful design, and a mobile fleet of state-of-the-art farm equipment to cost-effectively establish and manage profitable, diverse, and resilient agroecological systems. Canopy’s initial operational hubs are located in Champaign, IL and Spring Green, WI.

Canopy Compass

Canopy Compass is our web-based, crop suitability mapping and farm analysis tool built to support farmers' transition to regenerative agriculture. Compared to annual row and vegetable crops, perennial crops, with their deep root systems, require extra consideration when determining where they are best suited to grow.

Developed in partnership with the Savanna Institute, Canopy Compass harnesses the most comprehensive and scientifically robust crop suitability maps available today. More than 90 maps from over a dozen sources are completely free to explore on the site. In addition, farm-specific Compass Reports generated by the site empower farmers and landowners with valuable data as a first step when considering new alternatives for their land.

Partnership with the Savanna Institute

The Canopy ecosystem launched in 2022 in close partnership with the Savanna Institute, a non-profit research and education organization focused on tree-based regenerative agriculture. We continue to work closely with the Savanna Institute to ensure that our work leverages the latest science, state-of-the-art methods, and the most advanced tree genetics.
